The Mountains of the Moon are a region in the Vale of Arryn.
They form the western edge of the Vale, separating it from the Riverlands to the west. They are a substantial mountain range with many splinter ranges that dominate most of the territories ruled by House Arryn.
The western foothills and flanks of the mountains are home to Hill tribes, warrior clans of varying size but unmitigated ferocity against the civilized inhabitants of the region.
In the books
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Mountains of the Moon are tall and forbidding, among the tallest peaks in all of Westeros. The largest pass through the mountains is guarded by a fortress known as the Bloody Gate, while the Eyrie, the seat of the Arryns, is built on the shoulder of the Giant's Lance, the tallest mountain in the region.
Due to their superior knowledge of the terrain, attempts by either the river lords or the valemen to wipe out the Hill tribes have failed. However, they lack the knowledge and technology needed to successfully prosecute siege warfare against the Vale of Arryn, which they regard as their true birthright.
The mountains have snow-capped grey-green peaks. Rock slides are common and its foothills are rocky, high and wild. The high road from the inn at the crossroads passes through the mountains, which are inhabited by mountain clans who reject the authority of the Arryns. The Bloody Gate guards the high road from the Mountains of the Moon to the Vale of Arryn.
During the Andal invasion of the Vale, some of the defeated First Men who refused to submit to House Arryn fled into the Mountains of the Moon, becoming the mountain clans. Wild tribes have sometimes raided the riverlands from the mountains. Etchings of stars and axes by the victorious Andals can also be found in some parts of the mountains.
A Game of Thrones
After abducting Tyrion Lannister at the crossroads inn, Catelyn Stark brings him to the Eyrie by taking the high road through the Mountains of the Moon.
A Storm of Swords
Travel through the mountains is near impossible because of snowfall and raiding by the Vale mountain clans.
